Let’s talk about Google reviews.

Did you know Google reviews are super important for your business? They help boost your SEO, or search engine optimization, which basically means they help people find you online.

If you don’t already have a plan for how you ask for and get Google reviews, now’s the time to start.

I’ll share some tips we use in my Chicago-area office that work really well for us. And, I’ll guide you on how you can do the same.

Why Google Reviews Are Important

You’ve probably heard people say, “Just ask everyone!”

This is true when it comes to getting Google reviews.

You never know who’s going to leave you a review, so it’s important to ask often and ask early.

For example, anytime you have a great conversation with a customer, it’s the perfect moment to ask for a review.

Think Like a Consumer

Let’s face it—most of us check reviews before doing anything. Whether it’s looking for a restaurant to eat at, a hotel to stay in, or even choosing a new dentist, reviews help us make decisions.

It’s no different for insurance! If a customer sees a business with two stars, they’re likely to skip it. But if they see your business with four or five stars, you’ve got a much better chance of gaining their trust.

So, when you think about asking for reviews, remember that those stars could be the reason someone picks you over your competition!

When to Ask for Google Reviews

Here’s a simple tip: integrate asking for reviews into your daily routines.

My agency includes asking in our onboarding process. After a customer signs up, we send them a link to leave us a review. You can do this by text or email, making it easy for them to share their experience.

Anytime a customer has a great experience, ask for that review. The sooner you ask after a positive interaction, the more likely they are to leave a glowing review. And don’t be afraid to guide them through the process if needed!

How Google Reviews Boost Your Business

You might be wondering, “How do Google reviews help my business grow?”

Well, every time someone searches for “car insurance near me” or “best insurance agency in [your town],” Google’s algorithms show them the most relevant results. Reviews play a big role in determining who shows up at the top.

Consistent Reviews Are Key

Here’s a little secret: it’s not about getting 50 reviews all at once.

It’s about getting a steady stream of them. Regular reviews help keep your business fresh in Google’s eyes, boosting your ranking.

Think about it this way: when you search for something, how many pages do you scroll through? Most people don’t go beyond the first page. You want your business to show up in those top few results, and a consistent flow of reviews will help you get there!

Make a Plan and Stick to It

Now that you know why Google reviews are so important, it’s time to put a process in place.

In our office, we have both a text template and an email template that we send after a great customer experience. These templates make it easy for us to ask for reviews, and they make it easy for our customers to leave them.

But don’t just ask for reviews—give them, too! If there’s a local business you love working with, leave them a review. Say something like, “I love working with XYZ Business! They always provide great service. Five stars!” Helping other businesses shine can build strong relationships, and they may return the favor.

The Dreaded Bad Review: Insurance Agency Best Practices

As much as we hate to think it, your insurance agency will inevitably get a poor review. It’s inevitable in a service-based business.

So what’s the best way to handle a less-than-glowing review?

When your agency receives a negative review, respond promptly but thoughtfully—and never while emotional. Thank the reviewer for their feedback, acknowledging their concerns without becoming defensive. You can briefly address the specific issues mentioned, explaining any misunderstandings without making excuses.

A thoughtful response to criticism often impresses potential clients more than a perfect review record.

When appropriate, suggest taking the conversation offline by providing direct contact information. Then, follow up privately to resolve the situation.

If the matter is resolved to their satisfaction, don’t be afraid to ask them to update their review. It may seem a bit awkward, but again, google prioritizes reviews and you don’t want one person’s unhappy experience to mar your reputation. Especially if based on something within your control to fix!

And remember: use negative feedback as an opportunity to improve your processes.

Take Action

Here’s what I want you to do today: if you don’t already have a Google review process, create one! If you do have one, review it with your team and make sure it’s working well. Then, take action. Ask for that review. One review at a time, you’ll see your business grow.

Lastly, be sure to use your best reviews in your marketing materials. Share the great things your customers are saying about you everywhere you can think of!

Remember, every review helps save lives and makes a difference.
