The most important “sale” you’ll ever make is selling yourself on mastering your mindset. If you don’t buy into this notion then you won’t be able to sell anything to anyone else.

A positive and growth-oriented mindset will not only help you stay motivated to achieve your goals but you’ll also be reminded that rejections are an inevitable part of the job — and you can be OK with that.

In sales, having a growth mindset means continuously learning, seeking feedback, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.

At its core, nothing about the sales process is difficult. Most of you are able to do the following:

  • Start a conversation
  • Build rapport
  • Ask questions to uncover needs
  • Offer solutions for those needs
  • Answer questions and address concerns
  • Ask for the sale
  • Request introductions to friends and family

When you have good sales intentions, this business is not only lucrative, but it’s quite a lot of fun.

It’s also essential to have a customer-centric mindset, focusing on providing value and solving their problems rather than simply selling products.

My mantra is, “When you do the right thing for the right person at the right time… you can never be wrong.”

Always start there.

Ask yourself, “What is in the best interest of my customer?”

Don’t put your goals and desired compensation into play during a sales encounter.

Too often salespeople stress about the process because they need the sale or they need a commission or they need a customer to buy so they can qualify for a promotion.

Those who succeed at a high level for a longer period of time and, consequently, earn more referrals than everybody else are those who understand that sales are not about them. The prospect’s or customer’s needs are the only things you need to care about.

Ultimately, your mindset will impact their behavior, attitude, and approach to sales. So the mindset you adopt is pretty crucial.

I’ve been a leader in the sales industry for over 25 years now. I can honestly say some of the best conversations I’ve ever had led to absolutely ZERO sales.
